A Spotlight on the Artist's Sketchbook: Charles K. Steiner appears in Hyperallergic

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

One of Charles K. Steiner's sketches from his Dep(art)ing Passengers sketchbook was featured in a Hyperallergic article by Elaine Velie on May 29, 2023. The article chronicled the demise of The Brooklyn Art Library, which for many years had collected artists' sketchbooks and shared them with the general public. Charles' sketchbook included sketches of people waiting for their airplanes in airports alongside copies of large paintings Charles made from his sketches.

The painting from Charles' sketchbook that was featured in the article, Airport Gesture Study VII, is now held in the collection of the Fort Smith Arkansas Regional Airport.

Since the closing of the Brooklyn Art Library, the founders have announced that the collection of sketchbooks will be donated to four institutions across the country. While the donation process is ongoing, Charles' sketchbook may have been transferred to The Taube Museum of Art, Minot, North Dakota.
